Here is the latest cycling news from PTBA:

Let's Ride to Lunch!: Join Phil Walkden on the 9th and 23rd of Feb for the "Let's Ride to Lunch". We will be riding about 25 miles before finishing up for lunch.  Phil will be riding at a pace where  he can talk to new friends. We will take it easy on the hills and keep the group together. The ride leader gets to choose the lunch spot! So meet at the coop at 9:20 and the ride leaves at 9:30 sharp! Rain cancels.  Phil 385-5979

Hope to see you there and out on your bikes!

Save the date:  Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 is the 18th Annual Rhody Tour.  This is PTBA's only fundraiser.  Last year's event was a ton of fun -- it will be even better in 2010.  We need volunteers, join the fun. If you would like to volunteer to help with the Rhody Tour, either to help plan the event or to help staff on the day of the ride, contact ride co-chair Doug Ross - rhodytour@ptbikes.org or  360-821-1802.

Hood Canal Bridge Bike SignHOOD CANAL BRIDGE SAFETY ALERT
Three cyclists have recently been injured crossing the new Hood Canal Bridge.  The shoulders are closed in several locations, and the grated surface onto which cyclists are forced is not designed for cyclists' safety. All three cyclists have been hurt on the grating at the east end of the bridge while traveling west. Their tires have fallen into cracks in the grates. We encourage everyone to use extreme caution at this location, on all grated surfaces, and at all bridge locations where the 8 foot concete shoulders are unavailable. Watch for slippery spots when wet, and for gaps in the grating. Dismount and walk your bike if you are uncertain about the surface. Barriers are positioned along the bridge to allow WSDOT workers to complete the ongoing Hood Canal Bridge project. They expect the barrier to be removed in early October.  In the meantime, WSDOT are responding to the situation by installing signage alerting bicyclists to use caution due to the grated deck. They expect the sign to be up within a week. Until then, a portable sign board will be placed on the bridge to alert bicyclists. Read complete letter here (PDF).

Fall is here, get your lights and fenders on!  Safe and happy cycling from your friends at PTBA.

"I'll tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood."
